Trust Through the Darkness
The other night, my wife and I were traveling home with our sons. It was pitch black outside; my wife and I were listening to them talk and laugh in the back seat.
We turned off a fairly flat road and started down a road with a lot of curves and hills. As we would drive over different size hills, my sons had different reactions.
Some of the hills were fun, and they would yell “whee!” as they enjoyed the thrill. Other larger hills, however, seemed to worry them. In the darkness, they couldn’t see the other side of the hill; in the darkness of the unknown, they weren’t sure what waited for them on the other side.
But I knew the road very well. I’ve traveled it many times, and was able to navigate through the darkness with ease. As their father, I knew our destination was home.
I realized this is a great example of lives as we travel through the darkness of this world today.
Life has a lot of hills and curves. Some we enjoy, but others are difficult; we don’t always know what will happen next.
But our Heavenly Father knows the road very well. He’s traveled it (and defeated it!), and He is able to carry us through the darkness of this life with ease.
He sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so that we could put our trust in Him and have a relationship with Him. If we trust that He took care of the eternal problem of sin, then we can also trust Him to carry us safely through all the temporary storms of this life.
My sons didn’t know what on the other end of the hill, but they trusted me to navigate them through the darkness. In the same way, while we don’t know what this life will hold tomorrow, we can trust God to hold us and carry us through.
The ride will be bumpy and the road before us will be dark at times, but hold fast and trust God. When the darkness seems to encompass you and the unknown is all you see, remember the words of Jesus: “I have said these things to you, that in ME you may have PEACE. In the world you WILL have tribulation. But take heart; I have OVERCOME the world” (John 16:33).
